Our last cruise of the year, the fall cruise, ended on a high note with lots of laughter and good times! We had a total of 20 members attend this event. We started out meeting at the Chula Vista Resort in the Wisconsin Dells on a Friday night and went for pizza at the Moosejaw Pizza in the Dells. Saturday morning we were up early and started our one hour journey to the Wetherby Cranberry Farm in Warrens, WI. We all loaded a school bus and journeyed back to where the cranberries were being harvested. Our tour bus guide was one of the daughters of the Wetherby farm and she told us all about harvesting cranberries and things she did on the farm as a young girl. When we reached the harvesting site, she had told us her twin boys and husband and others in the family were helping with the harvest and would be glad to answer any of our questions. They were all very friendly and helped us understand how the cranberries are cared for during the summer and winter. We walked around and watched how the floating berries were moved into a big tube that took them to the truck where they would be hand sorted. This farm had over 240 acres and all of the harvesting would be done that next week. Did you know that cranberries don't grow on bushes?? They are actually grown on vines, sticky vines, and once you move the vines back, there are many many berries on those vines. Once the vines are flooded, a small tractor goes down the rows of the berries and vibrates the vines, the berries then float to the top! Then all of the berries are rounded up to the big tube that takes them to the truck.
After we watched the process a while, we put on hip wadders and walked out into the cranberries. The water wasn't too deep, not much over our knees. We took lots of pictures, threw cranberries in the air and took pics and had someone take a group picture of us out in the berries. What a fun experience!
We then left for lunch and then headed to the Carr Valley Cheese shop. We sampled different cheeses, even chocolate cheese, and several of us bought cheese to take home. I think we made the day for the cheese shop!
Some headed back to the hotel to check in and then we all met up at The Del-Bar for a delicious meal. Great recommendation from Steve Anders.
Sunday morning was a chilly morning. The Original Duck came and picked us up at the hotel and took us to where the Ducks enter into the river. It was another chilly ride but the sun was out and we all enjoyed hearing about the river, the rocks and other info. The Duck also took us back to the hotel, another chilly ride but a great time for all of us.
We then headed over to the River Rock restaurant, had lunch and then headed home. Another great Viper adventure with great friends. Hope everyone that went enjoyed this last cruise of the season.
Hope to see more members join our weekend cruises in 2025!
