We had a great first cruise of the year on Saturday, May 18 meeting at Wally's in Pontiac! to start our cruise. The weather was perfect and we made several stops along the old Route 66 and we made each one on time!
We started our day by visiting the new American Giants Museum in Atlanta, IL. The location was an old Sinclair gas station that opened in the fall of 2023. The station was updated into a nice museum with the history of the American Giants that were in various places along old Route 66. They had 2 giants on display and expecting 2 more giants Memorial Day weekend.
Next stop was the Ace Sign Company, a neon sign company. The previous owner opened the shop for us on this Saturday and explained the history of the museum where it was started by his dad. We were taken into the work area and he told us about some of the signs history. One Pepsi sign was hugh and beautifully lit up. This was a great tour viewing old various neon signs.
Next we headed to lunch at the Cozy Dog drive in. A dog on a stick! or what we now call a corn dog! It was discovered at this drive in years ago and loved by many. The owners continue to make the Cozy Dog fresh every day! Lots of Route 66 memorabilia was on the walls too!
After lunch we headed out to the old historic Route 66 led by our Springfield member Peggy Billhartz. Peggy led our group through some countryside where the original Route 66 used to be. We seen an old covered bridge which was part of the old Route 66 and ended up at the brick road of which we drove on. Took some pictures of the cars lined up on the brick road. It was pretty cool being on part of the old Route 66. Thank you Peggy for leading us through Springfield, you did a great job!
After taking pics we headed to Motorheads to view their collection of Route 66 memorabilia. They have the tallest and largest Route 66 sign and the American Giants Museum said they will be putting up a giant under the sign soon! Said it would like like the giant is holding the sign up! Since it was getting hot out, we all had a cool drink and then left for our final stop in Williamsville, IL.
We stopped at another old gas station and garage, it wasn't open but we took pictures and we walked down the street to a multidirectional sign and took a few pics.
Time to head toward our last stop to have dinner at Mona's in Toluca. We had a great family style dinner of fried chicken and spaghetti.
Another great day of Viper cruising with friends! Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the many stops with making great memories!
Next cruising event is Saturday, June 29 to the Bevans Mine in Platteville, WI
Hope to see everyone at this event too!
